I spend all day sitting at a desk, reading a book, writing notes, reading things on the computer and writing papers. And then when I’m done, I spend my leisure time on the internet. Still at a desk, still on a computer.
I am subsisting on a steady diet of Christmas cookies and Diet Coke. I wear an unseasonably cool tank top, jeans and an ancient sweatshirt every day. I have resorted to wearing my reading glasses to make the headaches go away. My back hurts from two weeks of coughing from my annual cold, and my neck makes sounds usually reserved for Rice Krispies.
Finals season is designed to take bright-eyed young high school optimists and crush their resolve into the cubicle dwellers they will eventually become.
But it is reassuring to remember that in Illinois, Ohio, Washington, Idaho and wherever else, my friends aren’t having much fun either.
Eight more days.
Now back to this paper.
